Attention club members who race on Thursday nights @ Mountainview:
Labour day is deceptively late this year, and we had to cancel last night due to the crazy storms - therefore, the thursday night series has been extended one week. The finale will now be on Sept. 3rd. Come out for some good racing, tasty bbq, cake, as well as year-end awards, slideshow, etc.

Mountainview Ontario Cup a Roaring Success
In the 8:30 start, 4 riders took to the start line. In the extremely competitive Peewee Mens category, Colby Matthews placed 14th, while Tyler Edwards placed 6th, a mere 37 seconds from 1st place. In the Beginner Men 19+ category, the always loveable Bill Ellery took 12th position. In Beginner Women 19+, Courtney Munro was 4th.
Next was the 9:30 start group. In this start, the MCC really heated up, despite the torrential downpours which threatened to shorten the race early into the 2nd lap. In Master 30-34 Sport
Men, Mark Cairncross placed 4th, only missing the podium by...well, ask Sean Ruppel. In 35-49 Sport Men, John Shier was 13th. The Master 40-45 Category had 2 strong finishes, with Mark Matthews finishing 6th, and Bill Cameron returning to the podium with a solid 3rd pla
ce performance. Dale Wood was having his best race in recent memory, riding in 2nd place at such a speed that his derailleur hanger vapourized at the worst possible moment, forcing him to abandon the race. Rich Guiot also saw difficulty in the heavy rains, and suffered a DNF. In the Singlespeed Mens race, with easily the most dominant performance of the day, was Davis Ross. He took the lead early on, and continued to put massive chunks of time into the field. Not only did he win his race by over a minute and a half, but he passed the entire 40+ Mens field who had started 2 minutes ahead. Also having phenomenal races were Angela Brewer and Erin Wood, who both placed 3rd in 20-29 Sport Women and 30-39 Sport Women, respectively. Erin was back on the bike after breaking her wrist only 4 weeks prior to the event.
The assault on the podium would continue during the 11:30 start. The rains passed, and the course went from being super slick, to super tacky, in a matter of minutes. In the Senior Sport Mens race, Brandon Parker was 19th, while Codey May was 12th. David Archer stole the show, racing his first Ocup in a few years to take the victory.
The final start of the day was at 1:30. The strong sun made for incredibly hot, humid conditions,
and the course was extremely slow and sticky, with little chance for recovery, and a long hike-a bike in the early laps. This caused greater than normal difficulties for the racers. In the Senior Expert Men category, Matthew Spak survived 2 laps before abandonning the race due to the
heat. Furthermore, in an upset, Thomas Wood finished 8th on his Misfit Singlespeed, beating out prerace favourite Lee Symmes, who finished 11th. In 30-39 Expert, Jeff Buchan raced to a 14th. However, John "clutch performer" Webb ensured that the MCC would not be denied a medal during the 1:30 start, recovering from a poor start to finish 3rd in 40-49 Expert Men.
After the race, members of the MCC shifted to the Wood residence for a BBQ, and to regale each other in stories from the day's racing.
Once again, an awesome day for the Mountainview Cycling Club. Along with the fantastic performances by our racers, the response from "out-of-towners" was overwhelmingly positive, once again impressed by our enthusiastic club, and tough, technical yet flowy trails.

MRD Dominates at Buckwallow
On July 19th, a hoarde of MRD riders travelled to Buckwallow Cycling Center, north of Bracebridge, Ontario, to compete in Ocup #5. This course has little climbing, but features the rocky, rooty terrain of the Canadian Shield that makes Muskoka so famously unique. MRD tore it up, with a litany of top 10's, top 5's, and podium placings.
In the first start of the day, Tyler Edwards and Colby Matthews competed in Peewee Men. In this highly competitive group, Tyler finished 16th, and Colby fought his way into the top 10 for his season's best finish. In Beginner Women, Courtney Munro finished 4th and Meg Whitton grabbed MRD's first medal of the day, finishing in 3rd place.
The 9:30 start group had the largest contingent of MRD riders for the day. In Singlespeed Men, Davis Ross blasted round the course for 4th place finish. Richard Guiot placed 24th in 45-49 Sport Men, while Mark Matthews and Dale Wood both had strong 7th place finishes in 40-45 sport and 50-54 sport men, respectively. Also in the 40-45 Sport Men category, Bill Cameron flexed his cycling guns to take the win! Of the females, Erin was sadly on the sidelines with a broken wrist, but hopes to be back in time for Mountainview. In Sr Sport Women, Angela Brewer represented well with a 6th place finish.
In the 11:30 start, more MRD success was to follow. Brandon Parker finished 20th in Sr Sport Men, and Mark Cairncross dug deep to finish a personal best 3rd place!
In the final start of the day, riders were treated to 4 laps of the rough, rooted course. Jeff Buchan placed 9th in the highly competitive Master Ex 30-39 category, while John Webb also placed 9th in 45-49 Ex men. In Sr. Ex men, Thomas Wood raced his rigid Misfit singlespeed to a tough 11th place finish, and Lee Symmes once again proved that he is the man to beat, winning the Sr. Expert Category.
The next Ontario Cup is at none other than Mountainview. With the strong performances at Buckwallow, combined with the home course advantage of our "tough and technical" track, the hardware should continue to pile up for MRD.

Reminder: When to ride at Mountainview, When not to.
Hello Everyone,
I don't want to be a wet blanket, but this reminder is neccessary:
With the Ontario Cup on our home course fast approaching, there will be a definite temptation to sneak up to the hill and get a few laps in. However, we must remember that the trails are still closed, except during sanctioned races and sanctioned group rides. Riding at any other time is not allowed, and innappropriate. Remember, that by riding while the trails are closed, you risk having Mountainview closed to riding entirely.
Now, obviously we want to DOMINATE the standings at the big race! In order to help this happen, we are setting up some extra ride opportunities at Mountainview, so that you can get the course dialled in:
-Monday night group rides at Copeland Forest will be held instead at Mountainview on Monday July 28th, and Monday August 4.
-Tuesday night group rides at Mountainview continue.
-A weekend group ride with a potential clinic will be setup for this weekend and possibly next weekend. Stay tuned for details.
-The Thursday night race series will be using the Ontario Cup course for the next 3 races.
With this many opportunities to ride, there should be no reason to trespass on mountainview property in order to ride.
Hammer down!

MRD Goes to Quebec V2
On July 5, Members of MRD competed at the Canada Cup in Bromont, QC. The grueling, world-cup course was made all the more challenging by the rain which soaked the course for much of the week leading up to the race, and on the morning of the race itself. However, the riders mounted up some mud tires, and let 'em have it!
In the 10am start, Codey May rode to a strong 5th place finish in Sr. Sport Men, while Erin Wood placed 7th.
In the 2:30 start, 4 riders took to the line. Davis Ross, racing on his singlespeed, had arguably his best race of the season, finishing in 11th place in Cadet Men. In the 50-59 Expert Men, Dale Wood competed well in his first race in Quebec to finish in 7th place. In Sr. Expert men, flat tires were the order of the day. Lee Symmes suffered a puncture on the first lap, and Thomas Wood climbed through the field to 2nd position on his singlespeed, before suffering a flat himself. However, he remounted and managed a 7th place for the day.

MRD at Hardwood Canada Cup
On May 30th, a strong contingent of MRD riders travelled to nearby hardwood hills to do battle at the Canada Cup. The course was dry and had few climbs, promising a fast race from the outset.
In the 8:30 start, MRD young guns Tyler Edwards and Colby Matthews lined up at the start. In the Under 13 category, Tyler finished an awesome 11th place out of 30 riders, while Colby overcame some stomach issues to finish a strong 18th place.
The 9:30 start featured a host of MRD riders. Experience from last weekend's race at Tremblant seemed to pay off for many riders. In the 30-39Sport Men's race, Mark C tore up the course for a personal best 6th place finish, while Mark M finished a solid 8th in 40-45Sport Men. In the 20-29 Sport Women's race, Angela Brewer finished a strong 7th place. In the most exciting battle of the day, Erin Wood barely missed the podium finishing 4th in 30-39 Sport Women. She had been leading the race with a few k to go, when she made close acquaintences with a tree, and slid backwards in the front group. However, she only missed the win by 30 seconds, and is eagerly anticipating the next race. Davis Ross returned to the Singlespeed category, finishing 7th against an unusually stacked category. Brandon Parker rode to a personal best 12th place in Senior Sport Men, a category that boasted over 40 racers. While they didn't compete at Tremblant, Rich Guiot and Dale Wood also had strong races, Dale finishing an excellent 5th in the 50+ Men's category.
Mountainview was further represented at the next start time, as Tom Guiot and Peter Lister lined up in the insanely fast Junior Expert Mens category. After battling each other for most of the race, Peter pulled away for a 17th place (9th of Ontario riders) while Tom came through in the 23rd position (12th Ontario).
The final start of the day, 1:45 PM, featured 5 MRD riders. In the 30-39 Expert Men category, Jeff "Big Sideburns" Buchan rode to a 13th place finish, while John Webb finished a strong 8th in 45-49 Expert Men. In the Senior Expert Men category, racers Matt Spak, Lee Symmes, and Thomas Wood lined up to start. At the end of 4 laps, Matt finished in 15th position, while Thomas "Little Sideburns" Wood rode to a strong 7th place on his rigid Misfit singlespeed. And saving the very best for last, Lee Symmes came through with the ride of the day, absolutely demolishing the field, taking the win with just under 2 minutes to spare.
All in all, a fantastic day at the races. MRD was one of the most prominent teams at the races, as the sea of blue was entered in all of the starts, and could be heard cheering loudly around the course. Next, racers look to next weekend for the Ontario Cup at Boler Mountain in London, Ontario.

MRD Does Tremblant
On May 23rd, Members of MRD travelled to the rocky slopes of Mont Tremblant in St. Jovite, Quebec. This was the first time racing outside of Ontario for many or the racers, who all raved about the course, the scenery (just ask the Marks!), and the different style of riding.
At the 10am start, Mark Cairncross raced in 30-39 sport men. He suffered a double, simultaneous flat, but thankfully was carrying 2 tubes, and got back into the race to finish in 33rd. Mark Matthews raced hard to a 19th place finish in the 40-49M sport category. Two of MRD's female racers, Erin Wood and Angela Brewer raised their games massively, learning to ride much more punishing terrain than that found closer to home. Erin rode strong to a 7th place finish in 30-39Sport women in the toughest field she'd seen all season, and Ange found the hardware, finishing 3rd in 20-29Sport women. In the Senior Sport category, Codey May and Brandon Parker lined up to start. Shortly after taking the lead on the first lap, Brandon broke his derailleur hanger, ending his race. Codey raced well, finishing 5th by our count, but the race officials missed his finish, and his actual result remains a mystery forever.
At 12pm, Peter Lister was in the Junior Expert Men category, who would tackle 5 laps of the demanding course. After nearly eating pavement while showboating for the crowd, Peter regrouped and finished in a strong 33rd position.
The last start of the day featured three more MRD riders. Davis ross competed in the huge Cadet field of 66 field, on his singlespeed. Davis demolished the course, finishing an amazing 19th place. The Senior Expert race was a test of character for Lee Symmes and Thomas Wood. After attacking the first climb, and sitting comfortably in the top 5, Lee broke his frame, and his day was done. Thomas, who was competing on his singlespeed, was sitting in the top 10 when he suffered a flat tire. He was able to rejoin the race, and fought back to a respectable 18th place finish.
All in all, the weekend was a great learning experience, and MRD looks forward to re-visiting Quebec for the Bromont Canada Cup in July.
