On May 30th, a strong contingent of MRD riders travelled to nearby hardwood hills to do battle at the Canada Cup. The course was dry and had few climbs, promising a fast race from the outset.
In the 8:30 start, MRD young guns Tyler Edwards and Colby Matthews lined up at the start. In the Under 13 category, Tyler finished an awesome 11th place out of 30 riders, while Colby overcame some stomach issues to finish a strong 18th place.
The 9:30 start featured a host of MRD riders. Experience from last weekend's race at Tremblant seemed to pay off for many riders. In the 30-39Sport Men's race, Mark C tore up the course for a personal best 6th place finish, while Mark M finished a solid 8th in 40-45Sport Men. In the 20-29 Sport Women's race, Angela Brewer finished a strong 7th place. In the most exciting battle of the day, Erin Wood barely missed the podium finishing 4th in 30-39 Sport Women. She had been leading the race with a few k to go, when she made close acquaintences with a tree, and slid backwards in the front group. However, she only missed the win by 30 seconds, and is eagerly anticipating the next race. Davis Ross returned to the Singlespeed category, finishing 7th against an unusually stacked category. Brandon Parker rode to a personal best 12th place in Senior Sport Men, a category that boasted over 40 racers. While they didn't compete at Tremblant, Rich Guiot and Dale Wood also had strong races, Dale finishing an excellent 5th in the 50+ Men's category.
Mountainview was further represented at the next start time, as Tom Guiot and Peter Lister lined up in the insanely fast Junior Expert Mens category. After battling each other for most of the race, Peter pulled away for a 17th place (9th of Ontario riders) while Tom came through in the 23rd position (12th Ontario).
The final start of the day, 1:45 PM, featured 5 MRD riders. In the 30-39 Expert Men category, Jeff "Big Sideburns" Buchan rode to a 13th place finish, while John Webb finished a strong 8th in 45-49 Expert Men. In the Senior Expert Men category, racers Matt Spak, Lee Symmes, and Thomas Wood lined up to start. At the end of 4 laps, Matt finished in 15th position, while Thomas "Little Sideburns" Wood rode to a strong 7th place on his rigid Misfit singlespeed. And saving the very best for last, Lee Symmes came through with the ride of the day, absolutely demolishing the field, taking the win with just under 2 minutes to spare.
All in all, a fantastic day at the races. MRD was one of the most prominent teams at the races, as the sea of blue was entered in all of the starts, and could be heard cheering loudly around the course. Next, racers look to next weekend for the Ontario Cup at Boler Mountain in London, Ontario.
